It’s fair to say I’ve had enough of festive goodies for the past few weeks.
From a monster burger for Christmas dinner in Westhoughton to mince pie cereal and supermarket chocolate Santa Clauses to a giant ‘Ferrero Rocher’ brownie, I really thought I had seen and tried it all.
But then a Chippy in Walkden posted something on Facebook that changed everything.
“FESTIVE SPECIAL – HUGE YORKSHIRE PUDDING FILLED WITH THUNDER MEAT, CHIPS & SAUCE – £ 6.00,” read a post on the official Walkden Bar website.

As a self-respecting Northerner, I love french fries and gravy, I love doner kebab, and I love huge Yorkshire puddings. So what could go wrong?
After a short drive from Farnworth to Walkden, I walked into the takeout and was impressed with how modern it actually was.
The staff was very friendly and seemed to be in the Christmas spirit.
I couldn’t make out the festive special on the illuminated wall menu and said to one of the staff: “I saw something on Facebook about doner kebab in a giant Yorkshire pudding.”

He immediately knew what I was talking about and told me it would take about five minutes.
Another employee told me it would cost £ 6 and I was pleasantly surprised to see that there was a card reader as it still seems to be a rarity in takeaways.
I took the styrofoam container back to my car and peeked inside.
It was an impressive 6 pound serving and I have to say it smelled amazing too so I made my way home.
The drive from Walkden to Farnworth with a huge take-away box full of a very messy meal is easier said than done, and I was very excited to see the inside of my car being redecorated with gravy and bits of kebab meat.
When I got home, I got used to it.
I love sauce and kebab separately, but I’ve never eaten them together and after taking a big bite I realized why.
It was all a little too salty for me.
I tried a bit of doner kebab that had no sauce and it was actually a very nice piece of doner kebab.

Then I tried the sauce with the fries – a much more natural combination – and that was also extremely pleasant.
The Yorkshire pudding is one of Aunt Bessie’s best according to Chippy’s Facebook post, and it’s very hard to go wrong with it too.
As a meal, however, it just didn’t work for me.
I would definitely visit Walkden Bar again if in the area as the quality of the food was really great and the staff were really nice.
In the future, I can simply go without kebab meat with sauce – especially if it’s sober.
