Why Freddie Flintoff was spotted litter-picking in Salford!

People giving their local canal a spruce-up as part of a campaign by a fast food giant also got to meet a sporting and TV celebrity.

Cricket star Freddie Flintoff dropped in to lend a bit of star power to a clean-up along the canal in Salford.

The former England bowler turned up for the litter picking along the Manchester Ship Canal organized by fast food giant McDonald’s as part of its Keep It Clean campaign.

The burger behemoth got people from its restaurants out and about sprucing up their local areas and also encouraged other people across Greater Manchester to join in with efforts to keep their neighborhoods tidy.

What was the litter pick and why did Freddie Flintoff get involved?

Freddie Flintoff joined the litter picks at the McDonald’s eatery at Riverside Retail Park in Salford and got stuck into the task of removing rubbish from a section of the Manchester Ship Canal.

It was all part of the fast food giant’s Keep It Clean campaign, which saw 91 litter picks take place across the UK andaround 150 McDonald’s franchises get involved.

More than 1,300 volunteers took part with the McDonald’s restaurant teams being joined by celebrities including reality TV stars, sporting legends, radio presenters and music artists.

Prior to the Salford event Freddie and the McDonald’s eatery spent around a week encouraging people to get involved with the campaign, either by organizing events or turning up to a pick with friends and family.

What was said about the litter pick and the celebrity visitor?

Franchisee Mark Nuttall who owns and operates 13 McDonald’s eateries in the area said: “It was fantastic to see Freddie in Salford, doing his bit to keep the city looking beautiful.

“I’m passionate about tackling the problem of litter in Salford, especially in the areas local to my restaurants.

“My teams go on daily litter-picking walks, and we organize regular litter picks as part of our ongoing commitment to keeping our streets clean and tidy.”
