A local group won £ 500 in a rubbish collection competition after collecting the most rubbish over a weekend.
Salford Litter Heroes entered the competition, which encouraged local community groups to collect trash in their area.
21 groups attended the two-day event which picked up over 5,000 items, 53% of which were single-use plastic.
With the Litterati, the participants could follow the collected garbage. It has been found that food packaging and beverage cans are the most common type of waste.
Salford Litter Heroes used their profits to buy more equipment for younger people and children, as well as trolleys and longer litter pickers.
Vanessa Hammett, Salford Litter Heroes Founder and Group Leader, said, “We love challenges and wanted to get involved as soon as we heard about them!
“We are very excited to be the winners and the money will be of great help so that we can involve the next generation in cleaning up their communities.
“With new equipment, especially for kids, garbage collection can be more inclusive for those who are passionate about being part of the solution.”
The competition was hosted by The Modern Milkman, which was founded with a mission to help people reduce waste in their communities.
Founder and CEO of The Modern Milkman, Simon Mellin, said: “We would like to say a big thank you to all the groups that have participated, every single piece of trash collected is a prize in itself.
“Supporting small changes like this will continue to be part of the solution, and together we can help reduce the waste that is affecting our planet.”
