Travel ban for Manchester, Bolton and Salford to Scotland lifted

Travel restrictions from Manchester to Scotland will be lifted tomorrow (Wednesday).

The curbs for Bolton and Salford will also be lifted.

Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced a ban on non-essential travel from the three areas earlier this month amid concerns about rising Covid levels.

But Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham sharply criticized the move announced at a press conference, describing it as “insulting” and adding that the people of Manchester were not “treated with the respect we deserve”.

On Tuesday, a parliamentary response from Scottish Health Minister Humza Yousaf confirmed the restrictions from Jan.

But the restrictions between Scotland and Blackburn with Darwen remain.

He said: “We will lift the travel restrictions currently in place on travel between Scotland and Manchester, Bolton and Salford.

“These restrictions are being lifted due to changes in the epidemiological position for these areas.

Regulations Amending Health (Coronavirus) Regulations (Limitations and Requirements) (Local Levels) (Scotland) Regulations 2020 are enacted today and will come into force on 30 June 2021.

“The restrictions between Scotland and Blackburn with Darwen remain in place.”

In a letter to Bolton Council Chairman David Greenhalgh, the First Minister also confirmed that the restrictions would be lifted.

She wrote: “The recent review of your situation by the Scottish Common Travel Area Travel Restrictions Government confirmed that your community’s efforts to reduce the number of cases have been successful.

“So I am pleased to announce that the rules will be amended to lift travel restrictions between Scotland and Bolton from Tuesday midnight with effect from Wednesday 30 June.”

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham said: “I had serious concerns about this travel ban and the way it was implemented, and I have been raising those concerns over the past few days.

“I thank the First Minister and the Scottish Government for listening and for the decision announced today to lift the travel ban in Bolton, Manchester and Salford.”
