The City Council has approved local funding for the connectivity project and will now seek to confirm £ 485,000 from the Greater Manchester Mayor’s Challenge Fund.
The Gore Street project was discussed in front of the mayor of the city at the Salford City Council property and regeneration briefing last night.
Salford’s local director recommended that the city’s Mayor Paul Dennett approve updated proposals for the Gore Street Connection, along with a council contribution grant of £ 195,000 reallocated from pinch point funding.
With an estimated total cost of £ 680,000, the Council is now seeking around £ 485,000 in MCF assistance.
Announced in 2018, the Mayor’s Challenge Fund as a whole is a £ 160 million master plan for active travel across the ten boroughs.
The Gore Street Connection is one of eight projects that received Tranche 5 program status in June 2019 as part of a number of city center connectivity programs.
Gore Street, which sits between Chapel Street and Salford Central Station and connects the Trinity Way ring road to New Bailey Street, is at the heart of an area that is undergoing massive change.
Filament, developer Grainger’s 364-apartment project on the north side of Gore Street, is slated for completion this year.
The interconnection scheme itself will improve a 175 meter stretch between Trinity Way and New Bailey Street, integrate with new developments and support the opening of railway arches to create new pedestrian walkways through what is in the Council documents as “currently a significant obstacle “Is described.
A day walking and cycling route between Gore Street and New Bailey opened in March, funded by the English Cities Fund.
A spokesperson said, “With placemaking and active travel high on the agenda, we wanted to open up this fantastic, safe route for both hiking and biking to connect communities.”
The original Gore Street scheme provided a left turn into Trinity Way, but this was ruled out.
The consultation has been carried out and the detailed design work is expected to be completed this month. If all funds are approved, the project is expected to start in November this year and be completed in February 2022.
